The mountains have been getting hammered with snow this winter, and thus, our run-off is going to go on for awhile this year. We are lucky to have so many great reservoirs and lakes nearby.

These Stillwaters will become welcome additions to your fishing arsenal this spring, trust me. Chironomids make up over 70% of a Stillwater trouts diet. Looking out for your best interests, as I always am, led me to the Jumbo Juju.

This pattern imitates the big midges (chironomids) found in large lakes and reservoirs. Chirinomids are very similar to our familiar river midges, but are much larger. Sporting gill tufts and longer bodies, these midges pupate and make their trip to the surface each day throughout the spring, summer and fall. Trout key on this emergence and feed voraciously on the emerging midges.

Chironomids are best fished under a yarn or Thill indicator with a pair of midges hanging at a depth just over the weedbeds. This can mean fishing from two to twenty feet deep, and makes for some very exciting fishing when the bite is on. When the bite is off, on the other hand, this method is very much like bait fishing, complete with lawn chairs and beer. We do what we gotta do.
