While damsels can be found in the slower-moving
stretches of rivers and streams, it is in stillwater
environments where they are more abundant and of most
importance to the angler. The nymphs are chameleon-like
and will usually match the color of the aquatic weeds in
which they thrive. They are generally some shade of
olive; however tan, rust, brown, and insect green are
also common colorations. Although there are a variety of
realistic looking damselfly nymphs available in the fly
shops, the marabou damselfy is an easy tie and will
outfish them all.
It is a great fly for trout, bass, carp, crappie, and
bluegill; and is best fished using a clear intermediate
sink line, but floating line will suffice. Cast and
retrieve near shore and/or weeds whenever adult
damselflies are present, and retrieve using short strips
with occaisional pauses. This fly should be fished near
the surface.
